The NEP semester structure, how the examination is marked, and a working method for the English papers.
The university and the framework
Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut — formerly Meerut University, established in 1965 — serves a very large number of affiliated colleges across western Uttar Pradesh. For most students in this region, CCSU is the university whose question paper actually decides the year.
Undergraduate programmes now run under the National Education Policy framework. In practice this means a semester system with two examinations a year, a course structure built out of Major, Minor, Vocational and Co-curricular components, and multiple exit options — a certificate after the first year, a diploma after the second, a degree after the third, and an honours or honours-with-research degree after the fourth.
For an English student the important consequence is simple: your syllabus is now defined paper by paper and semester by semester, with a fixed course code on each. Preparing from a generic "BA English" book is no longer good enough, because the prescribed texts differ from semester to semester.
How the examination works
- Two examinations a year — the odd semesters are examined around December, the even semesters around June.
- Internal and external assessment are combined. Internal marks come from class tests, assignments and attendance, so they are the easiest marks on the whole degree and the ones students most often waste.
- Descriptive papers. Expect a mix of short-answer and long-answer questions, usually with internal choice. Read the whole paper before writing anything and answer your strongest question first.
- Course codes matter. When you download a syllabus or a previous-year paper, match the code, not just the paper name — several papers share similar titles across programmes.
First-year English papers
The two first-year papers under the NEP scheme are the ones nearly every English student meets, whichever college they attend.

Prose and Writing Skills is heavily weighted towards comprehension, precis, letter and report writing, and grammar — which means it is the most scoring English paper of the entire degree, and the one students prepare least. The Poetry paper begins the literary sequence proper, and everything you learn there returns in later semesters.
Papers for the remaining semesters and for the MA programme are being added as each syllabus is verified against the official CCSU document. Codes and prescribed texts are revised periodically, so always confirm against the syllabus PDF on the university website before you begin a paper.
A working method for CCSU papers
- Get the correct syllabus PDF first. Not a coaching handout, not a senior's notebook — the official document for your admission year. Everything else follows from this one file.
- Collect three or four previous-year papers for your exact code. Within twenty minutes you will see which texts are asked every single year and which appear once in five. That distribution is your study plan.
- Read the prescribed texts, at least in outline. Long-answer questions in university papers are often unpredictable in phrasing, and only actual familiarity with the text lets you improvise well.
- Protect your internal marks. Assignments and class tests carry marks that require no genius, only submission. Students who lose the semester usually lost it here first.
- Practise writing full answers by hand, timed. Knowing the answer and producing it in fifteen minutes with a cramping hand are different skills, and only the second one is examined.
