One subject, several papers
English literature is examined very differently depending on who is setting the paper. A UGC-NET question wants recognition in fifteen seconds; a university question wants a structured argument across three pages. Preparing for one while reading material written for the other is the most common reason capable students underperform.
So the material here is split by examination. Choose yours and everything outside your syllabus falls away.

UGC-NET / SET / JRF English
Subject code 30. Objective paper, no negative marking, ten units covering drama, poetry, fiction, prose, language, criticism and theory. Pattern, marking and a route through the whole syllabus.
BA / MA English Literature
Descriptive papers, prescribed texts, internal assessment. Organised university by university — CCS Meerut, IGNOU and Delhi University.
Which one should you be reading?
- You have finished, or are finishing, an MA and want eligibility for Assistant Professor or a research fellowship — start at UGC-NET.
- You are in the middle of a BA or MA and the next semester paper is the immediate problem — start at your university page, and come back to NET later.
- You are doing both at once — which most serious candidates are — read the university page for your prescribed texts and the NET page for structure. The overlap is far larger than it first appears, and studying them separately doubles your work for no gain.
